Extended Gauge Invariance in Geometrical Particle Models and the Geometry of W - Symmetry

چکیده
We prove that particle models whose action is given by the integrated n-th curvature function over the world line possess n+ 1 gauge invariances. A geometrical characterization of these symmetries is obtained via Frenet equations by rephrasing the n-th curvature model in Rd in terms of a standard relativistic particle in Sd−n. We “prove by example” that the algebra of these infinitesimal gauge invariances is nothing but Wn+2, thus providing a geometrical picture of the W-symmetry for these models. As a spin-off of our approach we give a new global invariant for four-dimensional curves subject to a curvature constraint. † e-mail: [email protected] ‡ e-mail: [email protected]

On the W - geometrical origins of massless field equations and gauge invariance
We show how to obtain all covariant field equations for massless particles of arbitrary integer, or half-integer, helicity in four dimensions from the quantization of the rigid particle, whose action is given by the integrated extrinsic curvature of its worldline, i.e. S = α ∫ dsκ. This geometrical particle system possesses one extra gauge invariance besides reparametrizations, and the full gau...

In this paper we discuss the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking from the point view of vacuum pairs, considered as ground states of a Yang-MillsHiggs gauge theory. We treat a vacuum as a section in an appropriate bundle that is naturally associated with a minimum of a (general) Higgs potential. Such a vacuum spontaneously breaks the underlying gauge symmetry if the invariance group of t...

Two outstanding questions in particle theory are the cause of electroweak symmetry breaking and the origin of the masses and mixings of the fermions. Because theories that use light, weakly-coupled scalar bosons to answer these questions suffer from the hierarchy and triviality problems, it is interesting to consider the possibility that electroweak symmetry breaking arises from strong dynamics...

The fermionic sector of the Standard Model of Elementary Particles emerges as the low energy limit of a single fermionic field freely propagating in a higher dimensional background. The local geometrical framework is obtained by enforcing at a space-time level the whole gauge group SO(1, 3)×U(1)×SU(2)×SU(3) associated to fundamental interactions; equivalently, by assuming that internal gauge tr...
متن کاملRiemannian Gauge Theory and Charge Quantization
Particle theorists build gauge theories around an action with a symmetry group. The gauge field of the action is similar to the connection coefficient in the Riemannian covariant derivative. The field strength tensor is similar to the curvature tensor. Inspired by these parallels with Riemannian geometry, we propose a different construction. Instead of defining a gauge theory by a group, we def...
